A1– FULLY INVOLVED LEADERSHIP

Fully involved leadership is geared toward professionals who wish to expand their abilities in leadership. This presentation is aimed at anyone who wishes to lead at any level. FULLY INVOLVED is rooted in improving team performance and has application in both the public and private sectors. FULLY INVOLVED gives students the tools to create a pact that is applicable to all levels of the organization.

A2– BASIC TO ADVANCED AUTO EXTRICATION – Maximum 25 students

This course will offer extensive use of battery powered hydraulic rescue tools as well as basic and advanced rescue techniques for the removal of entrapped victims from vehicles. Methods to reduce time and effort while increasing efficiency in performance of the extrication will also be discussed. Various spreaders, cutters, & rams will be used in this hands-on session.

A3  FIRE INSPECTOR CONTINUING EDUCATION Maximum 48 students
This course will cover fireworks – legal to shoot update, food truck – on site inspections, fire caulking, solar, and much more.

A4  AIRWAY MANAGEMENT ZEN – Maximum 24 students
Airway management is a critical skill for prehospital providers of all levels to master. Having a fundamental understanding of how to manage an airway is essential to any successful resuscitation. This course will focus on all things airway. Utilizing a mix of classroom lecture and hands on skills (including realistic airway trainers and pig-airway lab), students will work toward their “zen” moment in the art of airway management.

A5  GRAIN BIN RESCUE AWARENESSMaximum 24 students
This course is designed for the safety / awareness and brief introduction to the operations level(s) of grain bin rescue for first responders. This course is designed to help students familiarize themselves with grain bins and the different types of agricultural silos along with their parts, construction, and hazards associated both in farm and industrial settings. We will cover the tools and resources vs. recover, as well as, a good “lock out tag out” procedure. This course will cover the “basic” knowledge needed to help assist a trained rescue company or team in the operations on scene.

B1  FUNDAMENTALS OF FIRE INVESTIGATION – Maximum 20 students
The class will cover the requirements of the modern day Fire Investigator. The application of NFPA 921, 1033, and 1321 will be reviewed. Case studies will be shown to assist the investigator.

B2  TALKING TIC’S – Maximum 24 students
This class will be a blend of lecture and demonstration of how our fire service thermal imaging cameras operate. We will discuss how the TIC operates, produces an image, and how the firefighter can utilize the information for fireground functions and decisions.

B3  FIRE INSPECTOR CONTINUING EDUCATION – Maximum 48 students
This class will review fire alarms & 3G problems, FDC testing, Standpipe testing and maintenance, CO2 and alarm systems, and a lot more.

B4  BOOGERS AND BEYOND – Maximum 24 students
Big problems come in small packages! Pediatric patients, while infrequently encountered in the pre-hospital setting, are well known to create high-anxiety among EMS providers. This course will focus on various aspects of pediatric management from birth through adolescence with a focus on “doing the small things right.” Utilizing a mix of classroom lecture and hands on skills, EMS providers will learn to quickly assess and manage this unique population.

B5  RESPONSE TO ACTIVE SHOOTER – Maximum 24 students
This class will cover the basics of response and actions to an active shooter situation. A “bridge” demonstrating what to expect from LEO’s and what they can expect from Fire/EMS personnel.

C1THE PASSIONATE ENGINE COMPANY Maximum 20 Students
In the passionate engine company course, students will learn and gain confidence in hose line management. From stretching hose lines appropriately from rig to front door to managing advanced hose lines, this class will help increase overall proficiency in all aspects. This class is open to the probationary firefighter to the department veteran, all levels welcome!

Honorary Dean: Brian S. Peterman, Assistant Chief – State Fire Marshal’s Office

Brian was hired with the State Fire Marshal’s Office in 1986, assigned to the SFM Fire & Explosion

Investigations Bureau in 1999. Brian was promoted to Fire & Explosion Investigation Bureau Assistant Chief in February 2022. He has over 30 years of experience in the fire service including 10 years with the Canton Township Fire Department holding the rank of Captain and currently a member of the Wooster Township Fire Department retired as Assistant Chief. Brian earned a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University. He also has an associate degree in Fire Science and graduated from Akron University’s Police Academy.

Assistant Chief Peterman has certifications as IAAI Certified Fire Investigator and Evidence Collection Technician, EMT-B, Firefighter 2, Fire Inspector, and Fire Instructor. He was a K9 handler for 15 years handling K9 Lacy who was also an ATF K9.

Brian has previously served as President of the Canine Accelerant Detection Association and served on the Board of Directors for the Ohio Arson School, Northern Ohio Arson Seminar, and the Ohio Society of Fire Service Instructors. He currently serves as President of the Ohio IAAI Chapter and member of the Board of Directors for the Ohio Chapter of the IAAI. Brian also is a Fire Instructor for the Cuyahoga Community College and Ohio Fire Academy as well as an instructor for the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy.

Assistant Chief Peterman was the Ohio IAAI Investigator of the Year in 2008, received the 2011 Summit County TOP COP Award, was nominated for the Governor’s Award of Excellence in 2012, received the IAAI George A Eisnaugle Award in 2016, received the 2021 Ohio Prosecuting Attorney’s Association Outstanding Peace Officer of the Year, and is acknowledged in the book “Forensic Fire Scene Reconstruction” written by David Icove and John DeHann. Brian has written articles for the Ohio IAAI and the Ohio Fire Chiefs Magazineand currently serves on the NFPA 921 and 1321 Technical Committees.

Keynote Address: Fully Involved Leadership

Mark vonAppen has been a member of the fire service since 1998 and is assigned to the suppression division where he holds the rank of Captain. He has served as a committee member for California State Fire Training and contributed to the development of Firefighter Survival and Rapid Intervention curriculums. Mark has been a featured presenter at the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) since 2015, published in Fire Engineering Magazine, and is the creator of the fire service leadership blog FULLY INVOLVED. He has been an instructor for the Santa Clara County Joint Fire Academy, a recruit Instructor for Pala Alto Fire, and an academy instructor at Evergreen Community College.
